House Museum Infante Dom Henrique
The House Museum Infante Dom Henrique, or simply Casa do Infante, it is one of the emblematic buildings of the city of Porto, which is impossible not to see when visiting the city. Also known as the House of the Old Customs Street, the current museum is simultaneously one of the oldest buildings of Porto, believing that there was born Infante D. Henrique. Infante Dom Henrique de Avis was Grand Master of the Order of Christ (holder of the heritage of the Knights Templar in Portugal) and is one of the most important names of the Portuguese Discoveries, since it was one of its main drivers. One of the proofs of its importance in Portuguese history is the fact that his remains were deposited in the Monastery of Batalha.
The House Museum Infante Dom Henrique is located on the riverside area and was built in the XIV century, at the behest of King Afonso IV, even against the will of the bishop, in order to collect all the goods that docked at Porto. The former building of Porto Customs was quite different than it is today, having been receiving a number of changes, modifications, renovations and extensions over the centuries.
For its facilities also passed the Mint or the Municipal Historical Archive, for example. Ranked since the year 1924 as Municipal Monument, because of its importance, the House Museum Infante Dom Henrique is now a small museum that is part of the City Museum, which preserves also, besides the history of customs activity and the Mint, the findings archaeological made in the 90s, which allows us to understand the local history since the Roman occupation to the present day.
A visit to the city of Porto can hardly be complete without a visit to this remarkable building of the cultural history of the city, both for its aesthetic beauty as for its history or the importance of its collection.
