The Church of Santa Clara is one of the greatest jewels of Joanine Baroque in Porto. Founded in 1416 at the initiative of King João I, it housed Poor Clare nuns in cloister until the 19th century. Its austere exterior contrasts with the exuberant interior, richly covered in 18th-century gilded woodcarving, altarpieces by Miguel Francisco da Silva, and vibrant polychromy. Classified as a National Monument since 1910 and restored between 2016 and 2021, it offers an intimate and less touristy experience than the Church of São Francisco, forming part of the historic route through Porto’s city centre.
